Controlling Your Weight

Submitted by Simmons
Sat, 24 Oct 2009

For those that have allowed their unhealthy eating habits to overtake their bodies and lives, seeking medical attention is crucial. Possible hospitalization and surgery may have to be considered to avoid life and death situations.

For others who have not allowed their overeating to become too extreme, there are many diets available to lose the weight and curb the appetite. Regardless of which diet is chosen, it is still a matter of mind over food. Determination and willpower will get the person and his or her body to where it should be and keep it there.

Many people eat when they aren't really that hungry. They eat out of boredom. They need to eat just at the regular meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Having a snack after dinner is acceptable, but try not to eat after 9 pm. Taking a nap or going to bed for the night right after eating is not recommended. This actually puts on the weight. The trick is to shrink the size of the stomach so the person feels full quicker. People that suffer from depression tend to overeat. They need to recognize this and find alternative ways to deal with their depression.

Drinking alot of fluids will also help curb the appetite. Eating healthy foods and snacks is important. Be sure the diet contains many servings of fruits and vegetables. Alcohol consumption causes bloating of the body which also contributes to weight gain.

Cheating on the diet will just make it easier to detour from the goal. Exercise is also important to burn off calories and get the blood and oxygen pumping. Joining a gym or taking aerobic, karate, or judo classes can be fun as well as productive . Taking walks, swimming, or getting involved in some other sport are also great alternatives. Staying active keeps the mind off the hunger and makes the day go faster.

The use of diet pills, diet teas, or some diets may hurt more than help. Checking with the family doctor is important if the person is unsure. Once the person gets down to their desired weight, they must continue to eat healthy and exercise. Treating oneself once a month is acceptable. If the person starts to overeat again, the stomach will stretch again and the person will be back where they started.

It is important to keep the weight under control for numerous health reasons. Obesity can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol which can lead to strokes or heart attacks. The benefits of controlled weight includes a decrease in blood pressure, better circulation, more energy, and a better self image.

It is important to remember that the extra weight did not happen overnight. It took time to get to the point of needing to correct the problem. It will take time to get back to where the body should be.
