Just to make it clear from the start of this article: we're not talking about calling all of your best friends while you're on a blind date to gripe about his eccentric taste in socks. It's not about the lurid lime-green color with swirls of neon orange print that you saw when he lifted one black slack-covered leg over the other at the dinner table. Or if you're a guy, it's not about the four-inch, sharpened fingernails colored in alternating yellow and fuschia. Yes, these may seem like horrible details, but this is, quite literally, about the state of you or your date's mouth while on a date.

If you're looking to get some mouth on mouth action at the end of an extremely hot date (maybe more, if you're optimistic), here are some don'ts that anyone should know before going on or during a date.

1. Don't forget to pack any of the following in your little evening bag or in the pockets of your coat: small mouth freshener or breath-freshening strips. Breath-freshening strips are more recommended, as they're easier to pop into your mouth and more subtle than the spray.

2. Don't whiten your teeth right before the date. Most teeth-whitening products require around twenty-four hours to make it work, so if you're planning on doing so and especially on a do-it-yourself whim, whiten your teeth a couple of days before the date to avoid disastrous results, such as an abnormally glowing smile or uneven pearly whites. Unless of course, you consider yourself an expert on this matter.

3. Don't forget to brush your teeth before leaving the house, for crying out loud.

4. For women, while retouching in the restroom, don't forget to check your teeth for lipstick smears lest you go back to your table looking like you bit into someone's neck.

5. Don't order anything with strong garlic or onion ingredients. Sure, it's alright to have that piece of garlic bread that comes with your pasta, but having potato wedges smothered in garlic dip along with onion soup is a bit too much. Unless you're deliberately trying to ward off your date with bad breath, stick to dishes that your breath spray and freshener can work with.

6. Don't pick your teeth in front of the table. If you feel a little morsel lodged between your teeth that just won't come off, excuse yourself, pick up a toothpick and go deal with your problem where your date won't see you grimacing and opening wide while flexing your toothpick-wielding hand inside your mouth.

These are basic manners, but a lot of people surprisingly forget them. Just keep in mind what you wouldn't want to smell on your date or see what your date is doing, and it's the same as what they don't want you to be smelling like or doing. If you're really into your date and haven't got him or her turned off, your chances of getting lucky get really high.
