One of the most popular procedures of cosmetic dentistry today is the use of dental veneers. These dental veneers are mainly used for restoring damage or discolored tooth. One application of dental veneers is for restoring fractured or chipped tooth, usually due to physical and outside elements. Another application is for closing the gap or spaces between teeth. So what makes it a popular tool for restoring damage or discolored tooth? Its popularity comes from the materials used in the practice, which are composite resin and porcelain.

Dental Veneers Materials

There are two types of dental veneers currently used today, composite resins and porcelain. According to porcelain veneers los angeles specialists, compared to other forms of dental restorative materials such as amalgam and gold, porcelain and composite resins offer a more natural teeth color, perfect as a restorative material for damaged or discolored tooth. The question now is, which is better between composite resin and porcelain?

Composite Resin vs. Porcelain

Composite resin is one of the most popular and relatively new dental restorative material used today. What makes it popular compared to amalgam and gold is that it is insoluble, aesthetically pleasing, insensitive to dehydration, and inexpensive. Compared to other forms of dental restorative materials, composite resin is much easier to manipulate, which is why composite veneers can be applied indirectly and directly, whereas porcelain cannot. A composite veneer may be directly placed (built-up in the mouth), or indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental laboratory, and later bonded to the tooth, typically using a resin cement such as Panavia. In contrast, a porcelain veneer may only be indirectly fabricated.

Another factor that made composite veneers more popular than porcelain veneers aside from its afforadability is that composite veneers are far easier to repair when fractured compared to porcelain veneers. However, porcelain do have advantages over composite resins. According to porcelain veneers los angeles specialists, unlike composite resins, porcelain veneers are much tougher and more durable. Though expensive, porcelain veneers are known to last twice as long as composite veneers. They are known to have a lifespan of 10-30 years.

Unlike composite veneers, porcelain possesses a more natural tooth color. Different porcelain veneers los angeles specialists have cited that because of the shade of composite veneers, dentists would sometimes require placing more veneers on neighboring tooth just to achieve an aesthetically pleasing smile.
