If you ask a lot of people which day of their life they remember most fondly, the chances are that they will tell you it is either the day they got married, the day their child was born, or that they cannot pick between the two! Equally, if you ask them which day of their life they were most apprehensive about you may well get “any day I had to go to the dentist!” as the reply.

It may seem like an odd combination, but if someone told you that, for them, a trip to the dentist went hand in hand with planning their wedding day you may well reply with laughter. However, this is exactly the trend that dentists all over the country are beginning to notice more and more often. This trend is very much aligned with the rising interest of the public in the possibilities of cosmetic dentistry.

But why, you might ask, would anyone possibly want to go to the dentist just before their wedding day? Well, the answer is a very simple one. Many brides-to-be and grooms-to-be and close relatives are including a trip to the dentist on their list of things to do before the big day in order to improve their smile.

It may seem like an unimportant thing to worry about in relation to a wedding – after all, the two people getting married are doing so because they are in love with more than just their partner’s smile. There is, however, much more to it than this. No wedding is complete without having a photographer rushing about and ordering people where to stand for the photos after the ceremony. It is often the idea of having their photo taken over and over again that spurs the couple-to-be into considering cosmetic dentistry. It is not unusual for people to be self-conscious about their smile, and it is rare that a couple-to-be would want to look at the pictures of their big day if they are looking uncomfortable in their wedding album pictures.

So the answer for many people who feel self-conscious having their photo taken – wedding day or no wedding day – is increasingly becoming cosmetic dentistry in order to gain that perfect smile. Cosmetic dentistry is an area that has been subject to great technological improvements in recent years and there are many treatments that are now widely available to help improve self-confidence.

A particularly popular treatment for brides-to-be is teeth whitening. This gives the bride-to-be, or anyone who chooses to receive the treatment, a much whiter smile.

There are many different types of treatment, ranging from over-the-counter whitening strips, to whitening trays and laser whitening when there is more discolouration and whitening strips will not be good enough. One advantage if a bride-to-be uses trays or strips is that they can ‘touch up their smile’ the night before the wedding meaning a dazzling smile on the day itself.

There are many other treatments available including restorative dental work, which includes veneers and crowns. As well as treatment for restoring broken, chipped, cracked or stained teeth, and cosmetic tooth contouring or reshaping. Cosmetic tooth contouring or reshaping is essentially where teeth are artistically altered into an ideal tooth shape.
However, it helps to get down to your dentists soon if you are thinking about cosmetic dentistry. For brides-to-be, or otherwise, it is important to assure that sufficient time is made available for the job to be done correctly so you can have the best smile possible on your big day.
