Porcelain VeneersSubmitted by annefields Mon, 15 Jun 2009
Porcelain is one of the many materials used for dentistry, particularly with cosmetic dentistry practices. This is because, unlike composite resins, porcelain offers a more natural tooth color. They are also stronger and they last longer than most other resins (typically 10-30 years depending on the type of practice it was used). Of its many applications, porcelain is usually used in dental veneers. In fact, porcelain was the first successful material that made it possible for dentists to improve the aesthetics of a person's teeth, providing people with otherwise permanent teeth problems second opportunities to wear smiles.
According to porcelain veneers los angeles practitioners, before porcelain veneers were invented, veneers at that time fell off after only a very short time as they were held on by denture adhesive. They were useful in temporarily changing the appearance of actors' teeth. It wasn't until Simonsena and Calamaia proved that porcelain could be etched with hydrofluoric acid and that bond strengths could be achieved between composite resins and porcelain that the substance was considered as a possible material for making veneers. Porcelain used to be very popular during its time. However, when composite resins were introduced into the market, the demand for porcelain dropped significantly. This is because composite resins were introduced at a significantly cheaper price than porcelain. Also, according to porcelain veneers los angeles professionals, a composite veneer may be directly placed (built-up in the mouth), or indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental laboratory to be bonded later to the tooth, (typically using a resin cement such as Panavia) unlike porcelain veneers which can only be indirectly fabricated. Composite veneers have also become more popular as they are easy to repair when fractured, whereas porcelain veneers have potential to fracture. It was only recently that stronger and more improved cements and bonding agents were used for porcelain veneers. Today, the debate on which material is better is still ongoing. Some would argue that porcelain veneers are more reliable than composite veneers. Though more expensive, porcelain can offer more than just longevity. They also provide a more satisfactory appearance than composite resins. Even denstists find them easier to match with real teeth than composite veneers in terms of color because of their natural hue. Also, according to porcelain veneers los angeles practitioners, porcelain veneers are less likely to get stained, providing people with bright, white, and longer lasting smile than composite resins.
