Effective Means for Teenagers to Manage HeartbreaksSubmitted by gonzaga.marco Tue, 11 Nov 2008
Teenagers are not spared from heartbreak.
If you are a teenager and you are going through a tough time dealing with such emotional pain right now, you should never allow your emotions to overtake your reasons. Denying your pain or resorting to self-destructive methods like substance abuse or reckless behavior will only aggravate your situation, burying you deeper into misery. If unaddressed, feelings of heartbreak pile up and can cause depression or anxiety disorder symptoms to arise. Although it can be very hard, the first step in healing a broken heart is to own up to the truth that you are hurting. As with treating a bullet wound, taking out the bullet is the first and most important task that would segue to the actual healing process. Luckily for such physically related pains, pain killers in varied forms are available to help numb you from the debilitating pain it would incur to perform such processes. But with emotional pain, facing the source of your heartbreak and dealing with it head on requires absolute courage, for no pain reliever can numb you from this ordeal. From here onwards, time and patience are needed until you finally achieve emotional healing. Below are some useful reccomendations you can try in order to aid you in dealing with your heartbreak. Do not be afraid or ashamed to cry. Crying is a natural means of letting out hurt feelings. Bottling up your sorrows and/or denying it would only result to dire consequences. Emotions are hard to repress. Eventually, they would find a way to burst out, but in more complex and destructive forms. Pour your heart out by writing in a journal. In doing so, try rationalizing your pain by understanding the cause and positive probabilities that your sadness can eventuate. Confide in your trusted friend. Good friends would be there to offer you a shoulder to cry on and probably some sensible advice to help you in your ordeal. Give yourself time to go through the motions of your sadness. Do not dissuade yourself from feeling it if it is there in the first place. You are only fooling yourself if you do. Grieve or bawl if you must. The important thing is to give yourself the freedom to acknowledge and express how sad you truly feel. Pain is the fuel that propels artists to create masterpieces. Use your pain to create. Try writing, painting, sculpting, composing, etc. If your broken heart is due to a specific person, avoid him/her for the time being until you are thoroughly healed. But if losing a loved one is the cause, cherishing wonderful memories by keeping mementos that would always remind you of him/her would assure that he/she would forever stay in your heart.
