Effective Ways to Drive Those Christmas Blues Away

Submitted by Felicity Maris Modesto

Everyone feels lonely every once in a while. As opposed to being alone, loneliness can be felt by any one of us regardless of other people's presence or company. In fact, being weighed down by this all too common yet seasonal feeling for a prolonged period makes us vulnerable to acquiring depression, a widely recognized psychological ailment. And once that happens, we have to be extremely wary that we do not get caught further into its vicious cycle of sadness, which makes us highly susceptible to being sucked into its irreversible end: suicide.

Faced with the Blues
Oftentimes, majority of us have either learned or developed ways to help ourselves cope with occasional feelings of loneliness. Certain circumstances in life, however, have forced some of us to contend with the reality of being separated from our friends and loved ones, opening us to the cold truth of having to face life on our own. Such occurrences makes us more vulnerable to being exposed to prolonged periods of loneliness. This is especially true during festive events like Christmas, which is intended to be celebrated in the company of our friends and family. The stark contrast between an individual's lonely situation and that of the season intensifies the sadness even more.

Coping with the Blues
Coming face to face with loneliness on Christmas day can be quite a hefty challenge. But as always, we are not rendered absolutely helpless. Driving the blues away on Christmas day is possible given that you try out the suggestions below.

Christmas is a time for selflessness. If you cannot spend time with your family and friends, then opt to spend it with the less fortunate ones. What better way to experience the true spirit of Christmas than to involve yourself in generous acts like volunteering for a Christmas feeding program or any other charitable activities at your local church or community?

Immerse yourself in work. Be generous to your colleagues by volunteering to take on their work responsibilities over the holidays, so that they can spend more time with their families.

Take advantage of modern technology and communicate with your loved ones. These days, long distance communication is no longer restricted to sending snail mail. The advent of computer technology and advanced communication systems enables us to spend some precious time with our loved ones no matter how far away they are.

Do something fun. Try redecorating your apartment or jazzing up your wardrobe on your own. Sing and dance along to the merry tunes of lively Christmas songs with gusto. What matters most is that you enjoy yourself.

Join Christmas parties or gatherings. Also, you could try contacting a colleague or friend who might be lonely too; suggest that you spend Christmas together. Seeking out other people who are on the same boat is like striking two birds with one stone: it does not only help you deal with your loneliness, but you also help the other person cope with it as well.
