Seeing Depression For What It IsSubmitted by markwalters Wed, 11 Mar 2009
If there is one aspect of the mood disorder depression that frustrates many medical experts, it is how flexible the condition can be. The list of symptoms has a number of common elements, but the severity, frequency, and even the mere presence can all vary from case to case. This, combined with the condition's tendency to go ignored or associated with personal problems by untrained individuals, is often cited as the reason for the theory that depression is actually much more prevalent than the numbers show.
The common symptoms of depression are easily to mix up with natural reactions to sad events. These include a loss of interest in activities the person used to engage in, a sense of hopelessness, sadness, and difficulty in making decisions. These are the more outward signs of the problem, and the ones that are most likely to be confused with grief. However, it should be noted that there are other signs of depression, ones that are not commonly seen during periods of grief. Sleeping problems are part of the usual accompaniment, along with unexpected gains or losses regarding weight. Irritability and restlessness, usually a by-product of the lack of sleep, are also observable symptoms. It is worth noting that, even if these can indicate clinical depression, these are not absolute, and each patient experiences the condition differently. There are situations where the person with depression can display symptoms of such severity that even the most casual observer would be inclined to suspect something is wrong. In other cases, they can be so mild or unnoticeable that they might be able to somewhat coexist with the condition. Others still may feel the effects of the condition, but have no real idea of why they are feeling that way. In the end, it may simply be a matter of time. The emotional reaction that appears similar to depression does not last forever, while the clinical disorder is likely to linger. A prolonged bout with sadness and grief may be more than just a natural reaction.
