The Many Triggers of Depression

Submitted by markwalters

Most often than not, people who suffer from clinical depression cannot believe that they suffer from the condition for the simple reason that they find no reason to feel that sad about. But it is important to understand that one of the most prominent qualities of having clinical depression is that it alters a person's happy disposition for no reason at all.

Depression, as a condition, is said to be caused by changes in the balance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. But there are certain triggers that have been identified to be connected to the change in mood. Here are some of them:

Trauma
Although this reason may seem more suited for anxiety disorders, emotional and physical trauma can lead to years and years of feeling depressed. That, and a string of other psychological complications.

Hormone deficiency
Menopause and puberty are said to be two of the biggest hormone deficiency conditions we undergo. It is during these times that older women and teenagers feel depression because of the shift in hormone production. Also, a deficiency in growth hormones or cortisol can trigger depression.

Genes
A lot of studies have shown that one's genetic makeup plays a role on one's risks of developing depression and many psychological disorders. Mood disorders, in general, tend to run strongly in families compared to other medical conditions.

Vitamin D deficiency
Previously thought to be only important for stronger and healthier bones, studies are now showing that a lack of vitamin D in the body can cause low mood. Blood tests that show a 25-hydroxy-vitamin D level lower than 35 to 40 should be immediately intervened by taking vitamin D supplements, especially if you're already manifesting symptoms of depression.

These are only a few of the unexpected factors that could cause an out-of-the-blue bout with depression. If you're one who's feeling unusually down, it would be best to consult a doctor to know more about the other possible triggers for depression and if you have it.
