The Simple Facts On SSRI Antidepressants

Submitted by markwalters

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The name can be quite a handful, and doctors just call them SSRI medications, but they are arguably the most popular type of antidepressant on the market today. SSRI medications are a relatively recent development, though they have quickly overtaken other forms of depression medications. This is theoretically because SSRI drugs have less severe side effects, and the instances of it are much less common. Despite recent questions on whether or not these drugs actually work, they are still considered the first line of treatment for cases of clinical depression.

SSRI antidepressants, like most medications used to treat the mood disorder, affects the chemicals in the brain that are used to deliver or receive signals. These neurotransmitters also serve as a means for the body to regulate its moods and emotions. It is believed that imbalances in the levels of these chemicals can affect a person's mood and cause a number of mood disorders. In theory, restoring the natural balance of these chemicals can alleviate the symptoms of conditions such as depression and anxiety. It is this process that SSRI medications – along with most other antidepressants – are based on, with SSRI drugs focusing on restoring the balance of the chemical serotonin.

There are, however, a few factors that people should keep in mind when taking any antidepressants, even the SSRI ones. Each person reacts to serotonin reuptake differently, and each brain's receptors also react differently to varying levels of serotonin. So while it may actually work on some patients, it may not produce any noticeable or appreciable effect in others. Another factor to consider would be genetics, which has been found to determine a numer of things related to depression and the treatment of it. There may be other factors to consider, such as a person's biochemistry and metabolism. Also, there are just some patients for whom an SSRI would not work. In such cases, it is best that the doctor is informed of it soon so that the prescription may be changed.
