Anxiety and depression are two separate conditions. The exact relationship between the two is still under study. Even though it's very common to find them together, any direct relationship to each other has yet to be found. For the time being, the relationship between anxiety and depression is often referred to as comorbidity. Meaning unrelated but co-existing. Their symptoms can overlap each other, which can make the initial diagnosis of either condition difficult. The symptoms can also be completely independent of each other.
Thankfully because of increased awareness, we are able to see the common signs of depression and are able to effectively discuss anxiety and depression treatments. Many people at one time had to suffer in silence if they showed even the slightest common signs of depression and if they did tell someone, they where thought to be crazy or unbalanced. That however is not the case now. In fact, everyone is encouraged to seek help immediately, if they start to see the early signs of depression and anxiety. Even though anxiety and depression are classified as two separate illnesses, they most often occur simultaneously in people. So what are signs of depression that we can look for? Depression is very individualized. It can either be a short or long term condition, one can be suffering from a mild to completely debilitating case, resulting in such drastic measures such as suicide. But for most sufferers, depression causes one to feel an overwhelming sadness, despair, low self-esteem, low self-reproach and discouragement. Not enjoying anything that you once use to, not sleeping well or eating properly. These and many others are signs of depression. How about Anxiety? Some of the external stressors that cause anxiety could be stress within the family, your job, interaction with people or other related phobias. Anxiety can hit you like a brick wall, you suddenly feel like everything is closing in on you. While others live in a constant fear of anxiety, or a low level state, just waiting for something to happen. Which in itself will cause anxiety. There are theories regarding the possibility that depression acts similar to anxiety in attempting to encourage avoidance of potentially harmful situations. Anxiety tries to avoid and prepare for physical danger, while depression tries to avoid emotional or psychological danger. Is there help? Yes. Anxiety and depression treatment is usually handled in one of two ways or sometimes both, medicinally and through psychotherapy. Some have also found herbal or natural remedies to help for both illnesses. The main thing to remember is that what works for one person may not work for another. There are many ways to deal with these problems just as there are many anxiety and depression treatments. It will take time to cope with your depression and anxiety but the battle can be won. Be patient and do not give up. Keep trying to find what works for you and you will be successful. In response to the customs and practices of their patients from a variety of cultures, physicians are becoming more sensitized to and knowledgeable about natural remedies. Vitamins and other nutritional supplements like vitamin D, folate, and vitamin B12 may be useful in alleviating depression, either alone or in combination with an antidepressant medication. While sadness will always be part of the human condition, hopefully we will be able to lessen or eradicate the more severe mood disorders from the world to the benefit of all of us.
