What Happens to Your Heart After the Breakup?: Spotting Emotional Indications Hinting at Depression After a Romantic Split Up

The days to follow after the painful exchange of “goodbyes” are the most agonizing part after a romantic breakup. At this point, your journey to being blue begins. Initially, you would glumly try to move on and live your life in a disoriented state. And regardless of how draggingly painful this could be, it is typical to anyone who is trying to retrace his steps back to the previous life he once led albeit the absence of that person he used to hold dear.

Depression Clouds Overhead
Despite of the number of times you have had your heart broken, there is no way of ever learning how to be immune from the pain. Even if this is the nth time, the pain would strike you just the same, possessing the same intensity and consequences you have experienced in your previous breakups. The only difference lies in how you deal with it later on after the initial impact.
You can either overcome the pain and emerge as a stronger person, reaching a wonderful destination after an agonizing ride, or you can spiral downwards, embarking on a doomed journey culminating to a commonly recognized psychological ailment known as depression. As differentiated from sadness, depression can encumber you with an intense kind of sorrow combined with negative feelings of hopelessness, discouragement, and despair. It can stay with you for a considerable amount of time—weeks, months, and even years.

The Warning Signs
Depression can get in the way of your living a normal life, sapping your interest and preventing you from functioning as you normally do. If left untreated, it can make you lose your interest in living altogether and prompt you to literally and permanently cut yourself off from the rest of the world. Events such as a romantic breakup could trigger it. However, differentiating between going through the usual motions of sadness or heading towards depression can be a challenge, especially if you are the one concerned. But because there are noticeable emotional indications hinting at depression, you can help assess yourself by taking note of these warning signs.
You seem to have been numbed to everything. Each day is an exact replica of the gray somber day that preceded it. In your mind's eye. the meaning of life has already been sucked out.
You no longer enjoy doing the things you used to love or hanging out with your friends. These past few days, you have always had the urge to stay alone, away from everybody else.
The littlest of matters always gets to you. Lately, you have been feeling edgy and vulnerable. At the slightest provocation, you respond explosively that you cannot help but notice how embarrassing all these flareups are for you. However, looking back at them with a logical mindset hardly kept you from feeling apathetic.
You are spaced out. With a constantly faltering concentration, you find it hard to think straight, moreover, make your own decisions.
When things go wrong, you always feel as if you are to blame. No matter how trivial it may be, you are unable to hold back the overwhelming guilt that washes over you, making you feel useless and despicable. Realizing the situation either on your own or through your friends' advice barely kept you from being overcome by guilt.
You contemplate on how everything would be better off if you were to put an end to it all. As ludicrous as this sounds, the thought just lingers in your head and sinks deeper with each passing day.
