A Brief Overview of Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition in where the pancreas does not make insulin like it should. This in turn causes too much glucose, better known as sugar, into the blood stream. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. It also, is a condition that over two million people in the United Kingdom live with daily. Complications from diabetes include but, are not limited to; lower-extremity amputation, heart disease, kidney failure, and even blindness. The condition also has many symptoms, none of which are tell tale signs and not everyone who has diabetes will show symptoms. Symptoms include; sudden change in vision, extreme dry skin, and sores are just a few.

There are many types of diabetes. In the following paragraphs we will discuss the 3 main types of diabetes. Even though there are many other types, those other types only make up about 1 of all recognized cases. This type of diabetes is usually caused by genetic or autoimmune issues. In some cases the environmental factors seem to play a crucial rule in the development of the disease. Treatment for this type of diabetes includes; diet changes, physical activity, and insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes, better known as non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is the main type, and accounts for about 90 of all pregnant women. Even though the condition seems to leave after pregnancy about 40% whom suffer this type will end up with type 2 diabetes later in life. If left untreated it can cause problems for the fetus and the mother.
