Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting people all over the world. People suffering from diabetes mellitus are increasing in number day by day, now a days diabetes mellitus is also considered as an epidemic.

In diabetes mellitus, either the pancreas produces insufficient insulin or cells in the body are resistant to the insulin produced. Because of this, sugar remains in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels. This is refered to as hyperglycaemia and the excess is responsible for complications including diseases of the heart, eye, kidney, nerves and other organs. Also it can spill over into urine which does not usually happen.

The treatment for diabetes mellitus is different depending on the type of diabetes the person has. Type I diabetes is almost always treated by insulin shots. This is because there is no insulin being put out by the pancreas and so insulin must be replaced. Type II diabetes is often treated with diet and medications. The medications are those that make the cells of the body respond better to the insulin being provided by the pancreas.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is controversial in terms of management and outcomes among women who are initially found to have glucose intolerance during pregnancy (Khandelwal, 1999; Scott, 2002). There is debate regarding appropriate screening and diagnostic criteria for elevated blood glucose during pregnancy, the best screening methods to be applied (Rumbold and Crowther, 2001; Scott, 2002), and also regarding the benefits and potential harm of screening programs (Brody, 2003).

GDM is identification of diabetes, or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) of variable severity first recognized during pregnancy (American Diabetes Association, 2004). GDM exists when there is an increase in blood glucose levels (Scott, 2002) because of a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism (Metzger and Coustan, 1998).
