Do You have Chronic Pain and Abuse Your Prescription Pills?

Submitted by Simmons

Signs of addiction to prescription pain killers include going to more than one doctor for the same prescription, buying your pills from a drug dealer, running out of your prescription before it's time for a refill, and finding yourself unable to fulfill your obligations due to feeling too "drugged" after taking your medication.

A person addicted to prescription pain killers is unlike other types of addicts. Usually these particular people are not looking to get the same feelings of euphoria as the traditional drug addict that is abusing illicit drugs. Most generally an addict that is abusing prescription pain killers that is also suffering from chronic pain is dealing with poor pain management. If this is your situation you should go back to your doctor and discuss your pain management options. Be open and honest with your doctor about your concerns in regards to your usage of your prescription pain killers. Your doctor may be able to assist you in uncovering why it is that your pain medicine is not working the way it was intended and point you in the direction of more effective pain management. It may be that you need a different type of treatment, but only your doctor can determine this.

Whenever a person is dealing with chronic pain it is suggested that the patient seek counseling in order to learn coping mechanisms because living with chronic pain is quite emotionally taxing. When all you want to do is wake up in the morning without aching but your condition prevents that from ever being a reality, it can be difficult to find a reason to want to wake up. Depression can set in, and when it does not, addiction can take its place. It becomes easy to try to drug yourself to get out of pain, even if that is not your conscious thought process. For this reason it is essential to work with a qualified psychotherapist while you work on finding a pain management technique that suits your individual needs. There are a wide variety of treatments available for pain. You, your physician, and your psychotherapist should be working together as a team to ensure that your whole self is being treated and that you are on the road to lifelong happiness and overall well-being.

As you navigate this difficult journey you may wish to consider telling people that you suffer from chronic pain in order to gain support from your friends, family, and coworkers. Everyone has struggles in life and the people that are in your life probably want to help you in any and every way possible. A well-informed person can offer a great deal of moral support and can be a pillar in your progress which can be vital to your overall success and happiness.
