However in as many as 40% of all the cases of erythroderma, not underlying cause can be found. ED onset usually occurs in these persons older than 40 years except when the situation results from atopic dermatitis, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, or a hereditary ichthyosis. Signs and symptoms of erythroderma include changeable degrees of itching swollen lymph nodes, electrolyte abnormalities because of fluid loss through the skin and swollen lymph nodes.

It is from time to time called the ‘red man syndrome' when no primary cause can be found (idiopathic erythroderma). Erythroderma is produced by several skin diseases, such as psoriasis, contact dermatitis, medicine reactions, and mycosis fungoides (a cutaneous lymphoma). Erythroderma can arise from a variety of causes most often the as an extension of a pre-existing skin disorder. There may also be normal areas of the skin present. Erythroderma may be also be due to an adverse medicine reaction.

It is applied to the skin for 24 hours and use than combination with UVB.

Systemic steroids may be helpful in the some cases but should be avoided in these suspected cases of psoriasis and staphylococcal and scalded skin syndrome. Emollients are more than effective for the treatment of erythroderma. Low-dose of methotrexate, ciclosporin or acitretin may also be useful for the treatment of erythroderma. Apply intermediate strength topical steroids beneath wet dressing.
