Facts and Fixes for Male Pattern Balding

Submitted by Thomas Choo
Sat, 17 Jan 2009

There are many reasons why baldness occurs and the types of baldness as well. It is standard for an individual to lose fifty to a hundred hairs a day. This loss is mostly counterbalanced by the growth of fifty to a hundred hairs a day. Hair loss only becomes baldness when the loss is not balanced by the growth of hair.

There are both temporary and permanent baldness. More permanent baldness is caused by a genetic condition called alopecia, or by male pattern balding or female pattern balding, while temporary baldness is mostly caused by stress.

Male pattern balding is reckoned to account for 95% of all balding eventualities. Men who suffer from male pattern balding lose hair at the crown of the head first, lending an 'M' shape to their hairline. The hair on top of the head continues to recede, though hair at the rear and the sides of the head do not often recede. This is caused by the DHT hormone, which is the result of converted testosterone.

Scientists believe DHT attacks the hair follicles on the top of the head because they are not as deep as follicles at the rear and sides of the head.

There are many cures for Male Pattern Baldness. Some men select medicine to control the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Medicine may also be beneficial in protecting the follicles against binding to DHT, so inhibiting the damage DHT causes. Hair transplantation takes deeper follicles from the back of the head and places them at the front of the head, filling in thinning spots with follicles more resistant to DHT damage. This treatment is highly effective when also used with a DHT control drug.
