5 Tips to Avoid Injuring Yourself in Sports or Exercise

Submitted by markwalters

We all want to get in shape, that's why we exercise or join sports. But the fact of the matter is that people have the tendency to do things wrong and hurt themselves in the process – a pulled muscle, a sprained ankle, etc. Now who wants to have those? I doubt it if anybody would raise their hands and say that they do.

With recent studies showing that a lot of sports injuries could have been prevented if the participants had the right knowledge of to how to avoid injury, not to mention a healthy amount of common sense, too. To help equip you with the necessary information you'll need to safeguard yourself against sports mishaps, here are some helpful tips:

Your gears are your friends. Most accidents occur because the athlete didn't wear protective gear. Aside from helmets, elbow and knee protectors are also part of the basic safety gear. For other sports, shin guards and shoulder pads are required.

Don't skip tutorials. Like most gadget users who skip the manual and go directly to tinkering with the device, many a sports goer skip the learning part and jump straight to doing the sport. Sure it may save you some money from hiring an instructor to teach you, but you may end up spending a lot more from injuries you can get from not doing the sport safely and correctly.

Don't overdo it. Your body can only take so much. Some people meet sports injuries because they force themselves to do too much, too soon, too hard. You need to ease your body into the exercise, not rush it.

Mix your routine up. If you're comfortable with just running the treadmill every day, you might want to think of adding something new to your routine as a stagnant exercise routine can lead to muscle overuse.

Dress accordingly. If you exercise outdoors during the winter, wear warm clothes and never forget to wear gloves and a cap. If you're out enjoying the summer sun, wear something breezy and will let your skin breathe.

With these tips in mind, you're sure to be able to enjoy your favorite sport without the risk of getting you into any kind of sports injuries. So what are you waiting for? Suit up and get in the game.
