Myth #1: You Can Get Ripped Abs by Solely Doing Ab Exercises

Crunches, sit-ups and other abdominal exercises will train your abdominals, but you will never be able to see them unless you remove the fat covering over. Some people would do hundreds or even thousands of crunches everyday and still not get the shredded look on their tummies.

Ab machines do the same effect of working out your abs, but not burning fat quickly. The muscles underneath the fat will be toned, but still stay invisible. There is no such thing as "spot reducing", wherein fat can specifically be eliminated from a chosen area of the body. The main approach is to reduce overall fat in the body. Belly fat will reduce and disappear as you go along.

Myth #2: Cardio is the Only Way to Burn Fat Effectively

Doing cardio for 60 to 90 minutes at a time is no longer the most known reliable way to get rid of fat permanently. Not many people can stick to the routine, especially if their other routines demand time. Cardio is good in maintaining fitness levels, but is not the best way to burn fat in the body. You also have to do strength training exercises 3 to 4 times each week. When you build lean muscle, metabolically active muscles let the body burn extra fat too, so you stay in fat-burning mode even after you exercise.

Myth #3: Whatever You Eat is Okay as Long as You Workout

To get the ripped look on your stomach, you have to follow a strict low-fat diet and exercise regimen. Diet accounts for about 80% of your success in getting a 6-pack. It is recommended to consume low fat, moderate carbohydrates and moderate protein to minimize overall body fat, including fat found in the midsection. Some of the best sources include whole and natural foods. Try to avoid processed food as much as you can.

Consistency is key

Follow a strict diet, exercise the entire body and do strength training together with cardio and you will get the results you've always dreamed of. You have to stay on the routine for 6 to 12 weeks or more to really bring your abs out.
