A Genetic Link Connecting Diabetes And Obesity

Submitted by James Carlson
Thu, 6 Dec 2007

The one and only risk factors that you have the most control over is your weight.

If you are obese, the single best thing you can do for your health and the prevention of diabetes is to lose weight. Even in small increments, when you shed pounds you are increasing your health benefits.
This is easy to say but may be harder to do. Resent studies are now showing there is a genetic factor affecting people who are obese with diabetes.

This genetic malfunction affects how the bodies use energy and insulin - two key elements in the functioning of your body and the cause of diabetes and obesity.

The studies cleary state that this is not a simple case of "cause and effect". You carring this malfunctioning gene is no guarante that you'll be obese or have diabetes. Basicly the link to this gene is there and it can be a major affect to you in your life.

You may have to work much harder at it than most others just to maintain a healthy body weight and stave off diabetes but you can do it! Discuss options with your doctor about the best ways to prevent the onset of diabetes.

It may suprize you to know that children in preschool are being diagnosed with obesity as well as type 2 diabetes due to thier genetics. The gene that has been discovered by researchers as a precursor to diabetes has been found in very young children.

But parents can reduce or prevent these things from happening by giving their children healthy lifestyle choices. Now that a DNA link has been found, the research can focus on finding a way to fix or prevent this from happening at some point in the future.
