Enjoying the Art of Dancing Safely

Dancing is a rather fun sport to do because you don't really have to follow rigid sets of exercise routines. It is, instead, replaced with graceful dance moves and routines that offers your body the physical activity it needs while having fun at the same time.

It is common for beginners to find themselves faced with injuries. A good example to use for this right now are the contestants of this season's Dancing With the Stars. A lot of the celebrity participants have suffered injuries like muscle sprains and broken bones because they attempted advance moves when there were novices in the arts.

How can you avoid following in their shoes?

Start slow. Admit it, you're a beginner and should therefore stick to basic moves. Familiarize yourself with the basic moves before you move on to a more difficult routine. Don't rush your progress. Doing so puts you in high risk of injuring yourself.

You may see yourself as someone fit enough to take long hours of practice, you may overwork your muscles in a different way than you would with regular exercise. Also, there's the risk of tripping on your partner since you're not used to the routine yet.

Don't forget to warm up. As like with any exercise, warming up for at least 5 minutes is necessary because it helps get your blood flowing and makes your muscles more limber, thereby minimizing risks of injuries.

Be smart in your choice of attire. Don't immediately jump into 3-inch spikes if you're not used to wearing high-heeled shoes at all. Start dancing in medium-heeled shoes of about 1.5 to 2 inches in height.

Always practice. Constant practicing gets your muscles used to the stress dancing gives to your muscles. Once you've gotten used to this fun form of exercise, you'll lower risk of overstraining your muscles.

Aside from the above mentioned tips to avoiding injuries while dancing, keeping focus appears to be an important factor to keep yourself injury-free while dancing. Unlike any other exercise, close attention needs to be given while dancing. If you don't, you might miss a beat and step or trip on your partners foot, leading to an accident. Remember that your goal for dancing is to stay in shape, not get harmed.
