Exercise Videos Are Hot AgainSubmitted by urlreader Tue, 28 Oct 2008
Exercise videos are hot again, thanks to television shows like "The Biggest Loser". If you want to rev up your weight-loss program, consider these options.
In general, there are five types of exercise videos: 1. Instructional. These videos show you how to use a specific piece of exercise equipment. These are helpful but once you know how to use the equipment correctly, you will probably not use them again. 2. Aerobics. These videos most closely resemble the exercise videos of the Jane Fonda era of the 1980s: They incorporate walking or dance moves to get your heart pumping. There are many styles, including salsa and even belly dancing. Aerobic videos range from low to high impact. In low impact exercise, you always have at least one foot on the floor, but it can be as intense as high impact aerobics, which includes lots of running and jumping. 3. Strength training: Viewers follow along, using light weights to strengthen and tone their muscles. You can increase or decrease the intensity of the workout to suit your fitness level and needs. There are a variety of weights available, from traditional dumbbells to stretchy bands to fitness balls. Pilate’s videos are also strength training videos because Pilates uses the body's own weight for resistance, thus strengthening muscles. 4. Combination: These videos include both aerobic and strength training work for an all-around workout. Many people prefer combination workouts because they know they will be getting a well-rounded program. 5. Stretching: Stretching elongates the muscles and can make you look longer and leaner. It also helps make you more flexible and helps to relieve stress. By removing stress, you will be calmer and less likely to drown your sorrows in a box of cookies. Choosing an exercise video is a matter of taste. Fortunately, there are many websites that allow you to read reviews and even see clips before you buy. When you consider an exercise video, consider the following: Price Duration of the video Fitness level The instructor's personality: Some instructors are very pleasant and clear in their instruction. Others are not; some can even get on your nerves. If possible preview a video and consider whether you would enjoy having that person on your TV every day The type of workout. The best exercise video is the one you will actually use. Kickboxing is a hot exercise option but if you are more interested in dancing, go for a salsa or ballet video instead. The impact level. If you exercise early in the morning before the rest of the household is awake, you don't want a video that requires a lot of jumping around Equipment. Make sure you have the proper equipment. While you can substitute some things (for example, use light weights instead of a stretchy band), you may not get exactly the same workout Exercise videos have come a long way from the early days. If you are looking for a new exercise option, take a new look at videos. You'll be surprised how much fun you can have exercising in your own home. About the Author
