There is a lot to be said about learning about close combat training or the martial arts for self defense. The fact of the matter is that you do not always get to choose whether or not you want to get into an altercation. Rather, it is oftentimes the case that an attacker selects his or her victims, and the would-be victim has no option to walk away from the situation. This being the case, it is probably a very good idea for everybody to have a working knowledge of what it takes to defend themselves in a physical altercation. For some, this means that they go to great lengths to learn the ins and outs of street fighting. For others, this means that they learn about pressure points on the body and how to use them to neutralize attackers. Whatever your level of interest is, learning something of self defense will come in handy at some point during your lifetime.
While a very significant portion of self defense is gaining the mental edge required to stick up for yourself, the physical aspect of self defense cannot be overlooked. Of course, there is the training that goes into learning specific techniques and maneuvers, but being in general good shape is also a critical part of being able to put your training into practice should the need arise. Take for instance, two people who are trained in the martial arts -- one is in good cardiovascular health and the other has poor cardiovascular stamina. Even if these two people had the exact same knowledge of martial arts or close combat training, the one with better cardiovascular health would prevail in an altercation. If you were to observe a training session in any self defense studio, you would immediately notice that many of the participants have a difficult time keeping up physically. This is not due to a lack of knowledge or training, necessarily, but due instead to not being in good physical shape. This means that while specific training is necessary to know how to handle yourself in an altercation, you must also engage in regular cardiovascular training to build the requisite stamina. Of course, although training sessions themselves go a long ways towards building physical stamina, you can also engage in regular cross training to add to your training experience. There are many things you can do to improve your cardiovascular health. The important thing is that you find something that you can do on a regular basis. If you do not like running, you can give biking or hiking a try. If your schedule does not permit you the freedom to spend a lot of time exercising, you can join a gym where you can get in and out as quickly as possible. Whatever alternative you select, it is critical that you perform your exercise regularly -- at least a few times a week. Being in good cardiovascular health will not only assist you in being able to train for self defense, but it will also provide you with an improved sense of well being. Moreover, regular exercise helps build confidence and a good physique, both of which act as deterrents to would-be aggressors. You should couple this training with specific training on close combat and the martial arts to better prepare yourself for whatever situation may arise.
