Menopausal Weight Gain: Coping and Prevention

Submitted by gonzaga.marco

Most women gain weight as they age – particularly when they hit their 40s and 50s. If you are experiencing this, you might find that maintaining a healthy weight during the menopausal transition can be difficult. Weight gain after menopause seems to be harder to lose, and the inches tend to accumulate around your abdomen, rather than your hips and thighs. With all the hormonal changes and hot flashes to deal with, weight gain is not something that will improve your mood. Here are some tips on preventing and coping with menopausal weight gain:

Exercise regularly. You may not notice it but as you age, you may be exercising less and less. Coupled with a slow metabolism, a lack of physical activity can contribute greatly to weight gain. Increasing your physical activity to include aerobic exercises and strength training can benefit you more than any online weight loss product can. Not only does exercising help you burn excess calories but it can also help you build and tone muscles.

Reduce calorie intake. Since you metabolism slows down as you get older, you should make a conscious effort to reduce your calorie intake. To do this, focus on eating a balanced diet that is rich in lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. However, be careful not to cut back too drastically on calorie intake or your body will respond by conserving energy, making extra pounds harder to shed. If you are unsure about how much calorie you need daily, you can consult a dietitian or nutritionist.

There is no magic formula for avoiding weight gain as you get older. The most you can do is to keep up a healthy lifestyle and stay active regardless of the hormonal changes and mood swings. The sooner you take steps to control menopausal weight gain, the more at ease, confident, and healthier you will be as you deal with a new phase in your life.
