Reaping Exercise from a Garden

Submitted by galaxywd

We are fast becoming aware of the rising costs of our groceries in recent months. When you get to the checkout counter, it is obvious that our bill is higher even when we are buying the same of amount of food and other supplies as we always have. A few cents added to numerous products we purchase will inevitably add up to several dollars on the total we spend each week. There are a number of ways that we can try and save some of that money if we use our heads.

Cutting back on luxury items of food and buying cheaper brands of products are a tried and true ways to save some money. The main objective is that we are still eating healthy. The purpose for food is to ensure our nutrition. Another way that many people who have a large enough yard space are going back to doing is growing their own garden. Some may be able to plant a bigger area while others may only be able to make a few rows.

The good thing about growing a small home garden is that it is not that expensive to do and you can end up with quite a few vegetables to either can or freeze for later use. Growing a garden of your own is definitely a labor of love and the labor part is also another healthy side benefit of the process. Planting and maintaining even a small garden will require getting your hands dirty and a certain amount of physical work which is also another way to help you stay healthy.

You can actually bring many muscles into play while working in a garden. There is a lot of bending, squatting, hoeing, weed pulling, and harvesting when the vegetables are mature. You might not be burning but about two hundred and fifty calories an hour while performing this work, but every little bit of exercise we get helps and the bigger the garden is the more beneficial it will be to your exercise routine, your pocket book, and your nutritional health.

Besides these benefits of gardening, people also find that the work they do in either a vegetable or flower garden can be a great way to relieve stress also. It might not seem like you are exerting your self all that much at the time because it can be very enjoyable as well as gratifying when you put the first fruits or vegetables of your labor on your dinner table.
