Trying to lose weight? Try Eating MoreSubmitted by mattlisk Thu, 16 Jul 2009
Overview
Dieting is a multi-billion a year industry. The extremes to which people have subjected themselves seems to have no end in sight. Detox, colonic cleansing, starvation, juice diets, raw food only and 700 and 800 calorie restrictions are but a few of the extreme solutions to the age old problem of weight loss. For me, I had tried it all and none of it worked until I stopped dieting and just changed the way I lived, moved and ate. In for the long haul Diets are like band-aids for the weight loss set. They are a quick fix for a short term condition and do not change habits, metabolism or make a true impact on body fat. The severity of the diet does not improve the success factor; in fact it diminishes it. It is far better to make incremental changes that are not disruptive or punitive but rather start the body on the road to equilibrium and its natural set point. Slow, steady changes in eating and activity habits that allow the body to do what it does best; is by far the better plan. Eat and Eat Often Rather than saving calories to the end of the day or for one big meal, five or six small meals is much better for your body. This sounds counter intuitive but it's true. This is based on the Thermic Effect of Feeding (TEF). Your body burns calories for every activity in the day. This includes the calories to consume and process food. TEF reports that up to 10% of the calories consumed may go to processing that food. So for a 500 calorie meal, 50 calories are required to process the meal. The TEF concept purports that the less often you eat, the lower your TEF, and this TEF factor has been connected to weight gain in the long range. A psychological benefit to frequent eating is the feeling of satisfaction. Not having that empty pit feeling goes a long way to sustaining the weight loss process. Conclusion Successful weight loss is not rocket science, nor does it need to be pain and suffering. A few simple changes like: * Eating more often - small healthy meals 5-6 times a day * Eating the right portion size is essential - weigh it * Calorie comprehension is essential - they are not all alike * Healthy, consistent physical activity is essential Eat often, eat right and the pounds will seem to effortlessly disappear.
