Home Treatment for Sunburn

Submitted by justinkenedy

Sunburn usually occurs due to excessive exposure to UV rays. Also, another cause of sunburn can be artificial UV rays such as the lights which are used in tanning salons. Sunburn is common in people who have outdoor hobbies such as skiing, golf etc. In this article I am going to highlight some of the home remedies for sunburn.

The main cause of sunburn is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, generally from the sun's rays. Sometimes it may occur from other UV light such as tanning salons. It is associated with some microscopic change in the skin.

Treatment:

1. The fat and lactic acids in milk are known to have soothing qualities for sunburned skin. Soak a soft cloth or cotton gauze in cool whole milk, and dab carefully onto the burned skin. Do this for around 20 minutes, and follow by rinsing off with cool water.

2. Aloe vera is a more conventional remedy. If you are lucky enough to own an aloe vera plant that is at least 3 to 5 years old, you own a natural, living, breathing first aid kit. Cut off a leaf from the plant and slice it lengthwise. Then press the colorless gel against your skin to heal it and soothe the sunburn.

3. Apply cold water pads on the burn. A mixture of vinegar, ice and water work very well to take the heat out and provide relief. You can also put some vinegar on a cotton ball and apply it to the affected area. A mixture of baking soda and cold water work in the same way.

4. Distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar is the next best thing. You can put the vinegar into a bath and soak or put some in a spray bottle, and just spritz all over the burned area of your body. Do not rub it in, but let it air-dry. Re-apply multiple times and by morning, you will well be on your way to healing.

5. Mix a few drops of lavender oil with yogurt and apply on skin.Yogurt will cool the skin down and lavender oil with help soothe the skin and diminish irritation and redness.

6. Drink more water when exposed to the sun, because your body loses water and essential salt in the sunlight. To prevent this, take more fluid to ensure your skin health.

7. Kava-Kava The root of this herb helps calm nerves without side effects associated with prescription medication. It is typically used in capsule form. Do not take with prescription drugs or alcohol, and do not drive while taking this herb as it acts like a sedative.

8. Comfrey Treatment for Sunburn: Comfrey contains allantion. It is a very helpful substance for cell regeneration. To use it for sunburn, just extract the juice or lotion taken from the stems of fresh comfrey leaves. It should give you an instant relief to sunburn.

9. Doctors also recommend that you enjoy a twenty-minute soak in a cool bath to which you have added 1/2-cup baking soda.
