How to Treat Psoriasis NaturallySubmitted by justinkenedy Wed, 17 Jun 2009
Psoriasis can be chronic and appears in people often in scalp, on back of knees and elbows on the back and in armpits. It can be patches that are red and also some can have little scales over them. Some people turn to alternative methods using herbs and supplements to compliment or replace traditional treatments for psoriasis. This skin condition can be very frustrating and cause the need to cover up one's legs and not wear shorts for individuals with the plaques in that area.
If you have a mild case of psoriasis, it can be unsightly and embarrassing. If you have a more severe case, you may also have itching and burning sensations and quite a bit of discomfort. Whether your case is mild, severe, or somewhere in between, you're probably on the lookout for natural cures for psoriasis that can relieve your symptoms. Treatment: 1. A cleansing juice and liver detox diet can therefore be a good way to begin treating your psoriasis at home. Carrots, beats, cucumbers and grapes may be used for juices. The juices of citrus fruits should be avoided. For detoxing, beneficial foods are seeds, nuts and grains, vegetables and fruits, along with fish, high protein meats and foods with a high sulfur content. Pork meat in all it's forms MUST be avoided while on a liver detox diet, along with most dairy products like milk and butter. 2. Preparations of this herb are commonly used in Europe to properly treat psoriasis, eczema and dry, flaky skin. Herbal medicine practitioners in the US maintain that applying this herb externally works better than using over-the-counter medications for psoriasis. 3. An Indian herb, turmeric has great healing power as an antiseptic to help relieve swelling, pain and inflammation and is another one of the natural health remedies for psoriasis. 4. Use a diluted apple cider vinegar over your psoriasis to reduce itching. Start with 10 parts apple cider vinegar to 90 part of distilled water. No known pathogen can survive in apple cider vinegar. 5. Some of the psoriasis remedies that are popular include coal tar, salicylic acid and dithranol. Salicylic acid is used in some acne preparations and assists the skin in peeling and healing. There are some strong prescription medications that your physician may recommend for severe psoriasis but due to side effects this must be carefully considered. Phototherapy is another treatment option and it uses uv lighting to help the skin clear. 6. This and other herbs are known to possess psoralens, which aid in treating this condition. Many plants contain psoralens, and these include angelica, carrots, celery, citrus fruits, figs, fennel and parsnips. 7. Daily sun for thirty to forty five minutes a day is helpful. Be careful to not burn the skin. A friend with bad psoriasis on her elbows and knees forced herself to wear short sleeves and shorts to expose these areas despite her reluctance. After a few weeks she noticed an improvement in the skin condition.
