Do not be ashamed, you're not alone.

If you are one of the more than 22 million Americans Dependant upon alcohol, do not be ashamed. It will be a great relief to know that the obsession to drink can be lifted and stopped forever. While most traditional alcohol treatment programs have an alarming 5%-20% success rate of recovery there are many other options available. If you have truly seen the light and are ready to change your life, you will be part of the percentage that makes sobriety a reality whatever method you ultimately decide to go with.

If you are totally Dependant on alcohol consumption, it may be best for you to consult a doctor and participate in some kind detox, whether it is part of a program or a personal choice to flush the toxins out of your system. During your stay in a detox program the staff will be able to help guide you into an after-care program. There are a number of different paths you can take to achieve the goal of staying sober.

Long-term inpatient treatment gives you time to regain structure and responsibility. The commitment for this type of care is usually 2 months - 1 year. This is where you are guided by peers to build a solid foundation to live by once you fulfill the commitment. It is often recommended to have an after-care plan in place before you discharge from the facility.

Short-term alcohol rehabilitation treatment gives you basically the same tools as long-term, just not the extra time to practice using them. The commitment time for short-term is genuinely 30 - 60 days. You leave with the basic knowledge of what it is you need to do to stay sober. An after-care plan is usually set up prior to you leaving.

Intensive outpatient therapy usually will follow one of the two previously mentioned programs. The number of meets per week depends on the individual and doctor. It is a helpful tool to get yourself acclimated to society with your new found life.

Regular outpatient therapy is a bit more lax. Again depending on the individual the number of appointments vary. This is where you can share concerns and questions you have about yourself and recovery.

Another great tool to use that will help you to maintain everything you learned in one or all of the above mentioned programs, is self help groups. Getting together with people that are just like you can have a tremendous impact on you staying sober. Within the group setting you will hear others talk about how they get through life without drinking. The support of one another is amazing. If you feel intimidated when you first go, remember they all started out new just like you. They will welcome you and be happy yet another person took the humble step of helping their self.
