Two types of diabetes are known. Type 1 is observed when the human body does not make insulin at all. People with type 2 either are deficient in insulin, or their cells ignore the insulin they have. Approximately 95% of people with diabetes suffer from type 2 diabetes. It is differently called "adult-onset" diabetes. If untreated, diabetes can cause blindness, nerve damage and vascular disorders that brings on foot or leg amputation, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and death.

KNOW RISK FACTORS
If the kid you gave birth to weighed more than 9 pounds and/or if you had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, you are also likely to develop diabetes. 45-year-olds and older are in the risk group, too. You are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, if members of your family had or are having it, or if you are in an ethnic minority group.
If you are in the risk group, your general practitioner may want to begin diabetes testing on a regular basis. The earlier you discover you have diabetes, the more you and your doctor can do to make sure you stay healthy.

ALTER WHAT YOU CAN
Unfortunately, you can do nothing to change your age, ethnicity or family history, but there are several factors that you can control. Your diabetes risk also increases, if you are obese, you do not do physical exercise on a regular basis and/or you have an unhealthy diet.
If you know you are at risk, making proper choices about what you eat and exercise can help you stay healthy. Studies have displayed that consuming a highly nutritious diet and exercising can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
If you are overweight, keep in mind that corpulence is the single most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes. According to estimates, 80%- 90% of people with diabetes are overweight. Losing weight and keeping it off can help hold diabetes at bay. Consume a variety of products, including those that are rich in fiber. Also, eat less.
Remember that any amount of physical activity is a lot better than none. Ride an exercise bike while you view the evening news or your favorite sitcom. Most of all, insure you take up an activity you like, so you will do it regularly.
By simply knowing your risk factors and making healthy choices a habit, you can control your health.
