Incidents of Reglan-Caused Tardive Dyskinesia on the Rise

Submitted by CBman

More and more incidents of Reglan- caused tardive dyskinesia continue to surface each year. In fact, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the number of reported injuries among Reglan users is steadily rising.

Just last year, the number of new cases of tardive dyskinesia, or similar movement disorders reported to the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System, rose by more than 6 percent in the fourth quarter and more than 14 percent over the second half of the year.
FDA Reglan Black Box Warning: May Increase Reported Injuries

Experts are predicting that the number of Reglan-caused tardive dyskinesia cases will continue to rise this year due to the FDA's requirement that a Black Box warning must be placed on the prescribing information.

This is expected because the FDA's alters spread awareness of the health risks associated with defective drugs. Many times, people taking a drug will not make the connection between their injuries and the medication they are taking until they see a report from the FDA.
Information: Reglan and Tardive Dyskinesia

Millions of people use Reglan as treatment for a gastrointestinal disorder. However, long-term use of this drug has been linked to the development of tardive dyskinesia, a condition marked by involuntary and repetitive movements of the body, including:

* Uncontrollable lip smacking
* Tongue protrusion
* Rapid eye movements
* Puckering, pursing of the lips
* Impaired finger movement

The development of tardive dyskinesia is directly linked to the dose amount and the length of time a patient takes Reglan. Individuals of advanced age, particularly women and those who have taken the drug for long periods of time are at the greatest risk of developing tardive dyskinesia.
