Understanding Internal Medicine Employment

Submitted by Simmons
Sun, 16 Aug 2009

With a range of areas, covering everything from oncology to obstetrics, there are doctors who focus on every part of the body, every type of disease, and every age of patient.

One lesser known medical specialty is internal medicine. Internal medicine is the area of medicine that deals with patients who are suffering from any number of rare or serious conditions. In addition to treating a select group of patients, the internal medicine physician uses nonsurgical tactics to diagnose and treat their patients. These characteristics set internal medicine doctors apart from other medical professionals, making internal medicine employment an important part of the medical community.

While most people have not heard of internal medicine, many have heard of the numerous sub-specialties related to internal medicine, such as cardiology, infectious diseases, or geriatrics. Many areas of medicine are considered to be internal medicine, since they focus on serious and rare conditions and diseases with nonsurgical treatment. However, since the body is a complex series of systems, it is helpful for internal medicine doctors to choose one specific body system or age group to narrow in on, in order to gain expertise to better assist their patients.

Internal medicine employment often involves several key duties. First, doctors who work in internal medicine must assess patients. This step is pivotal, because it is not possible to adequately treat patients until a proper diagnosis is made. Due to the nature of internal medicine, sometimes diagnoses can be difficult to make, and will usually require a battery of tests and a thorough physical examination.

From here, once a diagnosis is attained, the internal medicine physician must then focus on treatment. Because of the nature of most internal medicine cases, treatments can be multifaceted and involved, sometimes incorporating everything from therapy to prescription medication, or even a combination of several treatment methods. Along with this, internal medicine doctors need to work with patients to help them understand the condition and the treatment, especially since some treatments must be continued after being released from the hospital or other in-patient care.

Given the severity of internal medicine cases, most internal medicine employment opportunities exist in hospitals, where patients with acute conditions or injuries often go to receive immediate treatment. Most internal medicine employment falls under its sub-specialties, and many doctors will find positions in various hospital departments, such as cardiology or endocrinology, working with patients presenting with a specific range of symptoms. However, there are also internal medicine employment opportunities at various clinics or private practices, though these positions are less common.

Overall, internal medicine employment can vary widely, looking specifically at any part of the body or type of disease. Because of this, the need for doctors to fill these positions is imperative. Even if most people could not explain what internal medicine employment entails, these positions serve an essential purpose for patients all over the world.
