Weak erection connotes debility to sustain erection during sexual intercourse. It is a major problem suffered with advancement of age and is experience more commonly after the age of 40.Weak erection is a state where a male is not able to get required erection level for penetration during intercourse. Weak erection is high sex dysfunction among males and is caused due to inadequate blood supply in penis. This may happen due to multiple reasons including stress, distractions or underlying physical conditions.

How does Erection Occur?

An erection occurs as a hydraulic effect due to blood entering and being retained in sponge-like bodies within the penis. The process is most often initiated as a result of sexual arousal, when signals are transmitted from the brain to nerves in the pelvis. Erectile dysfunction is indicated when an erection is consistently difficult or impossible to produce, despite arousal. There are various and often multiple underlying causes, some of which are treatable medical conditions. The most important organic causes are cardiovascular disease and diabetes, neurological problems (for example, trauma from prostatectomy surgery), hormonal insufficiencies (hypogonadism) and drug side effects. It is important to realize that erectile dysfunction can signal underlying risk for cardiovascular disease.

Causes of Weak Erection

(i) Diabetes mellitus is perhaps the most leading cause of ED observed in men. They are observed in as many as 35 to 50% of diabetic men.

(ii) Other diseases that can cause ED are neurological disorders, cardiovascular disorders, atherosclerosis and multiple sclerosis among others. These diseases along with diabetes mellitus constitute 70% of the total weak erection complaints of the world.

(iii) They can be caused due to a large number of therapeutic drugs that act on the nervous system. This list includes antihistamines, tranquilizers, appetite suppressants, anti-depressants, etc.

(iv) Surgeries in the groin area can numb the nerve endings in that region, thus making it unable for impulses to reach the male organ. Prostate cancer surgery and bladder removal surgery are notable in this category.

(v) Age also plays a very important factor. As the age advances beyond 40, there is decrease in the hardness of the penis during erection; and by the age of sixty five years, most men cannot get an erection at all.

(vi) Hormonal imbalances can also cause ED. The absence or deficiency of the male secondary sex characteristic hormone, testosterone, will disable the man from getting substantial erections.
