Testosterone deficiency is known as andropause, a condition that is similar to what menopause is in women. Just as the estrogen levels for women decline during the change of life, the testosterone levels in men can also deplete. Symptoms of a testosterone deficiency include decreased sex drive, a change in mood and a loss of energy levels. It is common for men to have a testosterone deficiency late in life, but the age at which the symptoms start to occur change with each man.

Testosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It regulates mood, builds muscle and also helps you to control your weight. Testosterone also gives you increase energy and helps the body absorb protein. It helps with carbohydrate and lipid metabolism as well as liver function and other metabolic functions. Needless to say, a testosterone deficiency will have an adverse effect on any man.

Just as menopause means too much testosterone and too little estrogen; andropause, which is male menopause caused by a testosterone deficiency, means too much estrogen and too little testosterone. This causes a hormonal imbalance in the body that causes the body to work overtime as an increasing amount of testosterone is converted to estrogen and the viable testosterone is left to take care of the body.

While most men have a testosterone deficiency as they get older, some men have a dip that is lower than other men that can cause risks that are associated with having a severe testosterone deficiency. This can affect other aspects of health as well as psychological factors. These include body fat gain, apathy, depression, weak bones, back pain and the inability to concentrate. Many men have a severe personality change and become very angry or irritable.

There are ways to cure a testosterone deficiency. Men who are suffering from a testosterone deficiency should seek medical help from a men's health clinic that specializes in helping men increase their testosterone levels so that they get back to normal. Men no longer have to suffer from the physical and emotional effects that a testosterone deficiency brings on.
