Nursing Home Beds and Other Equipment

Submitted by Chriss Tyrrell
Thu, 1 Oct 2009

If you stop to think about it, nursing home beds really aren't a popular topic of conversation, as it pertains to features and accessories. Now things like cars, homes cooking and clothes, now thats another story. So information in these and so many other consumer items abounds. The funny thing is though, at some point in all our lives all of us will be using these or some version of these types of beds at leat temporarily.

So just like so many other things in life, preparation & knowledge is key to a smooth transition and also to insuring that you get the best product at the best price for you, a relative or a loved one. The fantastic news now, compared to years past, is that thanks to the Internet information on nursing beds and lifts in all their types and variety's abounds. Notice that I used the word lift!

This is because the picture that most people have in their minds, is a simple bed with side rails & adjustable top and bottom end. It's the way that they have seen them on TV, or perhaps if they've visited someone in a hospital or a relative in a nursing home. What they didn't see was what's called a "hoyer lift". This quite simply is a mobile lifting apparatus that's used to hoist a patient in and out of bed, to and from a wheel chair or mobile gurney.

Hoyer lifts are amazingly well engineered pieces of machinery. They come in both electric and manual form and take what would be an otherwise very difficult and dangerous "necessary" task and make it incredibly safe and easy. Even so, it does go without saying that the electric hoyer lift is definitly less strenuous to operate then the manually operated models. Just the same, if need be, even an elderly person can operate a manual hoyer lift.

If you're preparing to be a caregiver to a relative or loved one who is going to be confined in any way to a nursing or hospital bed, now is the time to become familiar with the hoyer lift, how it operates and all its features. Think you won't need one because your charge is able to get up and around on their own? Think twice! Thats because something as minimal as a twisted ankle caused by a mis-step off a stair can change all that in an instant.

The deal is that should you find yourself in the need of one and the knowledge of how to operate it, the crisis that has created this sudden need can and most often will dominate the day. Take a moment to call around and find out where your local senior center is and there will be a director there you can talk to who can point you in the right direction for free lessons. Remember that when it comes to home care, preparation is the key to making your job easy and enjoyable.
