Food Combinations of Greater Nutritional ValueSubmitted by markwalters Mon, 23 Mar 2009
You may notice that there are foods that we grew up eating in tandem for meals or snack time. We may not know it, but some of the food items that we've grown accustomed to eating together actually complement each other's health benefits. Would you like a few sample combos? Here are some:
Peanuts and whole wheat Whole wheat bread is full of a variety of amino acids that are good for our health. The ones that the bread lacks, we can get from spreads, preferably peanut butter. We need the complete chain of amino acids to help us build and maintain muscles. Blueberries and grapes Fruits, in fact, in any combination have been proven to show more antioxidant response as opposed to when you eat a single fruit in the same amount. Fruits and vegetables are known to possess unique phytochemicals that help keep us healthy. Apples and chocolates Red apples are said to be abundant in the anti-inflammatory flavonoid quercetin. This flavonoid is said to lower risks of allergies, heart attack, Parkinsons's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and prostate and lung cancer. Chocolates contain a flavonoid called catechin that reduces a person's likelihood of developing plaque build-up in the arteries and cancer. When these two flavonoids work together, they loosen clumpy blood platelets, drastically improving heart health. Soy and salmon Studies are suggesting that high levels of vitamin D can lower risks of developing cancer. Tuna and Salmon are two of the richest sources of vitamin D that we know of. How does soy fit into the picture? Soy contains an isoflavone called genistein that raises bioavailability of vitamin D in the colon and prostate. Red meat and rosemary We often use rosemary to spice up red meat for grilling. Grilling causes the meat to produce cancer-causing chemicals. Rosemary can help temper the cancer-causing effect of the burnt meat. Rosemary contains the antioxidants rosmarinic and carnosic acids that are said to decrease the amount of cancer causing chemicals in charred meat. If you think that these are the only food combinations that offer your body a lot more than just tasty treats, think again. Check your usual plate combo and find out the many health benefits it can provide you.
