Approved by the FDA on March 27, 1998, Viagra is a drug commonly used to treat impotence in men and is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Sildenafil Nitrate, a Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, or PDE-5 for short, is the active ingredient in Viagra, making it possible to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated. During an erection, blood fills tissue in the penis, causing it to enlarge and become stiff. Medications such as Viagra containing PDE-5 inhibitors relax smooth muscle tissue, allowing the penis to fill more easily with blood.

Viagra is taken orally and ranges in dosage from 25 mg – 100 mg, depending on the extent the severity of the erectile dysfunction experienced. Other examples of PDE-5 inhibitors used in treating sexual impotence in men can be found in drugs such as, Vardenafil (Levitra) and Tadalafil (Cialis).

Erectile Dysfunction, E.D., can be caused by several different types of physical and psychological problems, and drugs such as Viagra have been found to be 83% effective in treating impotence caused by a number of these factors. Underlying causes of E.D. include variants such as high blood pressure, prostate surgery, diabetes, medical side effects, and emotional or psychological distress. In all these instances, the use of Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors has proven effective.

Men who are taking medications which include nitrates, such as nitroglycerin, should avoid taking Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors due to the risk of heart attack, stroke or death. As with most prescription medications, check with your health professional to see if Viagra or other PDE-5 inhibitors are right for you.

Other side effects include Indigestion, nasal decongestion, headache, skin flushing and, in rare cases, sensitivity to light. You shouldn’t take Viagra if you’ve been diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease, have experienced heart failure, or have low blood pressure. Talk to your doctor to see if Viagra is the right Erectile Dysfunction treatment for you or if other E.D. may be a better option.
