Physician stool for Medical SeatingSubmitted by expertseo4all Thu, 20 Nov 2008
Healthcare professionals are subjected to stressful work environments, both physically and mentally. Healthcare workers involved in lifting or shifting of patients or equipment are most likely to develop injuries. However, there are many other tasks that can contribute or cause injuries to healthcare professionals. CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has stated that occupational injuries have risen dramatically in the healthcare field, over the past decade.
Work related stressors can often lead to a variety of disorders which are commonly known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), musculoskeletal disorders can be defined as “injuries and disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs.” MSDs usually develop over a period of time and mostly affect neck, upper limbs and lumbar region. Healthcare professionals sometimes fail to realize that it could be work related and therefore often ignore it. According to an estimate by OSHA, the average cost per MSD incidence is $12,000 and does not include surgery cost. This figure could shoot up to $43.000 if surgery costs are included. Even if the cost factor is overlooked, it would be very difficult to ignore the diminished quality of life, a direct result of MSDs. It is therefore imperative to better understand workstation equipment and use ergonomically designed equipment. More often than not, work related task induce improper posture and is the main culprit behind musculoskeletal disorders. Physicians often endure long seating hours and encounter sustained or repetitive twisting of neck, wrist and trunk. Such physical stress and discomfort can mainly be attributed to improper design of seating equipment. It is therefore imperative to have ergonomic exam stools which are designed in accordance to the needs of healthcare practitioners. The following factors should be kept in mind while choosing exam stools: Adjustability: The stool should feature a pneumatic height adjustment mechanism to ensure optimum comfort. Stability: The stool should have a five star base to facilitate even weight distribution and enhanced stability. Mobility: It is imperative to check that the stool incorporates the right type of caster/glides depending on the floor it is intended to be used on. Durability: The stool should be easy to use and durable. Depending on the requirement, you could also opt for a stool with an adjustable and upholstered back rest to enjoy an ergonomic fit. However, to enjoy a healthy lifestyle you should always remember that ergonomics does not begin and end at work. It should be interwoven in all aspects of your life. Heath is wealth! About the Author
