Restoring or Resurfacing Your Fiberglass Swimming Pool?Submitted by cisinprachi Wed, 26 May 2010
With summer coming up, you open your fiberglass pool to prepare it for the season. You notice a few cracks, chipping and flaking, and you decide that this project is small enough to be able to tackle yourself. You check out some of the websites and they make it sound easy enough and the product durable enough so you go ahead and order the necessary materials. All the goods arrive, though you forgot to order a breathing mask. You need to go out and grab one of those as this is very important with fiberglass, in fact there are some known health issues with fiberglass pools
Now you are ready to dive in (pun intended) and start your little diy pool resurfacing project. Pretty soon you've discovered that you need gloves from all the splinters you're getting and a long sleeved shirt to help with the burning and itching. You've progressed pretty well, covering a quarter of the pool in a day and realize that you probably have to take next weekend to finish it as well. But now you're seeing these weird bubbles appear and part of it is uneven so you need to figure out what to do about those. You jump onto the Internet to see how to deal with the bubbles and you notice that there are a lot of people complaining about those same problems. You also notice that any warranty the company offered when pools are installed does not cover any do it yourself repairs. You press on. The following weekend, it's getting pretty warm out, and you've recruited a couple of your buddies to help speed up the process. One of them suggests an angle grinder to get rid of the bumps. You don't have one so off to the hardware store you go while your friends continue. Upon your return, you notice that your friends are exhausted and frustrated and angry with you for roping them in to this crazy scheme. It's not a pretty story but it is a common one. Fiberglass pools have a lot of benefits. They can require lower maintenance, can be more affordable, tend to be easier (and quicker) to install but when trouble does come, any claims for DIY Pool restoration should be carefully considered.
