Sleep is necessary for the body to function, grow, and heal after an injury. Most research findings recommend that grownups need from six to eight hours of sleep nightly. Many people, however, are unable to accomplish this. Approximately 20 million individuals who live in the United States alone experience serious difficulty sleeping every night.
A number of factors that cause sleeping problems are responsible for this startling statistic. For example, a significant number of people snore. Deep snoring may even cause sleepers to wake, startled, at the noise. Moreover, individuals who have a spouse that is a loud snorer sometimes find it difficult to sleep with such a racket happening in the same room! Snoring can also be a symptom of a similar sleeping problem described as sleep apnea. This disorder can happen when an individual quits breathing in the middle of sleep. It may be a result of blockages in the nasal and sinus passages, or by being overweight. This problem can be deadly, and persons who are diagnosed with sleep apnea frequently wear a mask that sends pressured air to their lungs while they are sleeping. Sleep apnea may cause narcolepsy, another common sleeping disturbance. Often, however, people who do not have sleep apnea are diagnosed with narcolepsy. People who have this problem often fall asleep suddenly and without warning wherever they happen to be. If a person is being treated for this problem, the doctor usually requires that individual to avoid driving before the disorder is under control; sleeping while driving is extremely dangerous! Still another potentially dangerous sleeping problem is referred to as sleepwalking, but is sometimes described referred to in medical literature as somnambulism. People who sleepwalk perform the same behaviors - cleaning house, taking a shower, walking, et cetera - that they perform during their waking hours. Nearly 20 percent of the population worldwide may sleepwalk. Sometimes, people have often documented cases of people who have left their homes or killed someone during a sleepwalking episode! Most frequently, however, the person who is asleep is in much more danger than the people nearby. The ideal alternative is to get the sleepwalker to return to bed. People who develop insomnia often have problems going to sleep at night. In the event that they are able to fall asleep, they usually do not sleep well and awaken easily. They sometimes only sleep for a few hours before experiencing this condition. The consequences of this sleeping problem are daytime sleepiness and decreased physical coordination. Although persons who experience insomnia frequently suffer from sleepiness, however, those who suffer from chronic insomnia often learn that they are continually over-alert, and find it difficult to relax or remain calm. Other potential side effects of this health problem are physical and mental exhaustion. A large number of believe they know how to treat insomnia. Potential cures include some odd home remedies for insomnia. One suggestion is a combination of honey and apple cider vinegar, although there is no convincing proof demonstrating that this concoction] is effective. Alternative home remedies for insomnia involve such activities as drinking warm milk at bedtime, relaxing while playing slow music, and relaxation or meditation exercises. Other insomnia cure strategies are Chinese medicine or acupuncture, and aromatherapy. Various herbal remedies have been used as strategies to cure insomnia, including valerian, lavender, and hops. Some clients even attempt behavioral treatment methods attempting to find a potential insomnia cure. A significant number of medications have been developed to overcome the effects of insomnia. A more recent cure for insomnia is insomnia hypnosis, or insomnia hypnotherapy. Therapists who use insomnia hypnosis coach persons with insomnia to develop beneficial sleeping routines by introducing a group of suggestive thoughts that will help them to sleep more easily. Clients are taught the techniques of self-hypnosis to help them treat this problem. This approach is a type of insomnia hypnotherapy that can be very effective with clients who are very suggestible, but is significantly less helpful for individuals who are analytical thinkers. A quite similar method, referred to as Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is typically more useful with these people. Summary: As many as one in ten persons of the United States population experiences some form of sleeping problem. Insomnia is a sleep problem that stops people from getting to sleep or sleeping soundly each night. Various treatments are used to assist them effectively manage this problem.
