Sleep Tips for Shift Workers

Submitted by markwalters

Everybody enjoys sleeping as much as the next person. Unfortunately, some experience more difficulties in getting sleep than others. This holds especially true for people who work varying shifts. A good example would be technical helpdesk representatives who get assigned to certain shifts, which may be changed every so often.

With changing working hours comes broken circadian rhythms. The individual's sleep-wake cycle is constantly shaken up, such that it becomes difficult for those who work varying shifts to fall asleep easily. And with very little sleep, a lot of health complications may arise, not to mention the possibilities of encountering accidents because of sleepiness.

To help avoid subjecting yourself to these complications, prioritizing sleep as much as any other important thing is a must. Here are some tips shift workers can use to get their sleep back on:
  • Block out the sun on your way home. As unable as you likely are at avoiding traveling under the sun, you must try to block out as much light as possible. Wearing heavily-tinted sunglasses can help. The reason behind this is because your mind will tell your body to get up and go because it's supposed to be the time of day when it should be at work.
  • Implement a strict “Do not disturb” policy when you're going to bed. Save for exceptions of actual emergencies, politely ask the people who live with you to, as much as possible, avoid waking you up from your sleep.
  • Drown out external noise. If you're one who is comfortable listening to white noise to drown out external noise sources, use a white noise machine. If one is not enough, use two.
  • Sound-proof your room. If you really need complete silence to get sleep, invest on quality sound-proofing for your room. Plug window nooks with foam that blocks the sound from coming in and out of the room. Or if you can't afford an actual soundproofing system, use ear plugs to mute noise.
Sleep is not something that anybody should take for granted. It helps the body recover from a day's worth of labor. If you love your body just as much as you love your job, do take the time to rest at least seven hours a day.
