Spanish Moss Essential OilSubmitted by valknut79@gmail.com Tue, 25 Mar 2008
Spanish Moss essential oil is a highly potent oil, usually used when creating perfumes or body products. Spanish Moss essential oil is also often referred to as Oak Moss essential oil, and many people describe the fragrance of this oil as reminding them of the forest.
Spanish Moss essential oil was known by the Native Americans as ‘lungs of oak’ and was commonly used to treat respiratory problems. It can be used to treat respiratory problems by placing into a diffuser, or putting 2 – 3 drops in a basin of warm water and standing over the basin with a towel over your head. Many high grade perfumes contain Spanish Moss essential oil, as the scent will last a long time, helping to ‘ground’ the other scents. This in turn makes the perfume fragrance last longer. Spanish Moss essential oil blends well with many fragrances and materials, making it the perfect ingredient in a perfume. When using Spanish Moss essential oil in aromatherapy, it will help the oils it is combined with stay longer, so it is a great oil to use in a burner or diffuser, where you want the scent to last as long as possible. It should be noted that if you are pregnant, or suffer from epilepsy, Spanish Moss essential oil should be avoided. Other precautions include diluting Spanish Moss essential oil to 5% or less if it is to be used directly on the skin (including in body products), due to its potency. As with any oils that you purchase, you need to ensure that when buying Spanish Moss essential oil, it is of therapeutic grade. Cheaper synthetic oils have absolutely no value health wise, and may in fact be harmful, which goes against the principle’s of aromatherapy, which strives to treat the body, mind and soul. Spanish Moss essential oil can be found readily on the internet, but be sure to check with the retailer that it is therapeutic grade before purchasing. Many health food stores now also stock a large range of essential oils, as do shops dealing with alternative, holistic and natural avenues. To find which oils blend well with Spanish Moss essential oil, invest in an aromatherapy book, or use the internet as a source of information. Many retailers list information about the oils they sell, including complementary oils.
