Can Stress Cause Hair Loss?

Submitted by boza247

Many women suffer from hairloss, which can have a devastating effect on their self-esteem. One of the causes of this can be physical or emotional stress. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium. Here is more information on the condition and what you can do about it.

What is stress hairloss?

This is where the body reacts to a physical or emotional stressor by shedding hair. The hair is typically lost in a rather diffuse pattern around the head rather than in bald patches. This can give the appearance of thinning hair.

What causes stress?

There are various things that can cause it including giving birth or entering the menopause. Being exposed to long-term work related stress or the emotional stress from difficult relationships maybe a trigger in some people. A reaction to new medication can also be a cause.

When does it occur?

It may become apparent 1-3 months after the stressful event has occurred.

What is the treatment?

In many people the condition needs no treatment as the hair starts to grow again when the stressor has been removed. However it is a good idea to take measures to prevent stressful events in the future if you have suffered from this type of hair loss.

How can I prevent stress?

Taking regular exercise has been demonstrated to be an excellent way to combat stress and has also been used to treat depression. It can increase the release of endorphins that lead to a feeling well-being.

Eating a good quality diet that is rich in B vitamins is important for hair growth. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Caffeine has the effect of putting the body 'on alert', such as increasing the heart rate so try and cut down on drinks containing it such as coffee and cola.

Get plenty of sleep and relaxation to allow the body to rest and catch up. These simple tips should help most people overcome their problem with hairloss due to stress. If the hair does not start to regrow you can contact your doctor to find out if there are any other options that you should consider.
