Getting Enough Sleep: A Must for Late or Double Shift Workers

Submitted by gonzaga.marco

A lot of people today are working in a late shift schedule. In the United States alone, millions of people work on double shifts just to make ends meet. Aside from working during the day, many people are also choosing to work during the night. While this working schedule may bring good money for your everyday needs, it may have a bad effect on your health, especially if you are not getting enough sleep.

So if you work during the night or both shifts, the following all-natural sleep aid tips will help you have enough sleep and still get to work at night:

Avoid caffeine a few hours before the end of your shift.
If you want to have a good sleep after work, stay away from coffee a few hours before the end of your shift. Caffeine is known to keep one from having a good sleep.

Try not to smoke near the end of you work shift.
Since nicotine is also a known stimulant, it is also best to avoid smoking a few hours before your work shift ends.

Establish a sleeping routine.
In order for you to have a healthy sleep habit, you need to establish a solid sleeping routine and strictly follow it. Just go to bed as you would in a normal day, then develop a routine from that start. One effective way to develop an effective sleeping routine is to sleep and get up at about the same time every time you go to sleep. This will train your body to adjust to the sleeping routine you want to establish.

Eat something before hitting the sheets.
If you are hungry before you go to bed, try to eat a light meal or snack, so as to avoid waking up due to hunger pangs.

Minimize lighting in your bedroom.
Too much light in your bedroom can affect the quality of your sleep. With this, make an effort to darken your bedroom by hanging up blackout curtains or dark sheets over your bedroom windows.

Get rid of noise and other things that can distract your sleep.
For you to have a good sleep, try to minimize unnecessary noise as well as other things that can disrupt your sleep. If you are really determined in getting enough sleep, you can use earplugs, close your bedroom door, or better yet unplug your bedroom phone.

Determine the things or situations that stress you.
In determining the things that stress and tire you out, make it a point to write down these factors. This way, you will surely have a good rest, for there are no worries for you to fuss about as you try to head to bed in the morning.

Learn how to relax.
A relaxed body tends to have a better sleep than with a tensed and stressed out one. You can try learning breathing techniques and relaxing your body from head to toe.
By doing all these tips, you will not only get to have a healthy sleeping pattern, but you will also do well at your night shift or double shift work.
