Seroquel, which contains qetiapine, is an atypical antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia, catatonia, paranoia and bipolar disorder, by working on chemicals in the brain that are responsible for our thinking and behavior. For treatment of bipolar disorder, the initial dose is 50mg twice a day while for schizophrenia it is half of that. It has to be taken as the doctor directs, usually twice or thrice daily, with water or food. Try to take the dose at regular intervals, so that there is no missed dose. The missed dose can be made up, but if the time for the second dose is approaching, then forget the missed dose.
seroquel can cause hypotension while increasing the sedating effects of other drugs that sedate. Patients have to give their medical history to the psychiatrist, including all illnesses they have suffered from, all the drugs they are allergic to and all the medications taken by them which include drugs prescribed by other doctors, including vitamins minerals herbal products. Most common side effects include stomach upset or constipation, weight gain, headache, agitation, dryness in mouth, weakness, drowsiness and drop in blood pressure on standing suddenly making one dizzy. Since it causes tiredness, anyone who operates machinery or drives, should be extremely alert, or try to avoid performing such a task till they know how the drug is affecting them and learn to handle it.
Lesser occurring side effects include hypothyroidism or seizures while those who have been taking it for long could suffer from irreversible tardive dyskinesia muscle rigidity, irregular pulse or blood pressure, rapid heart beat, heart arrhythmias, high fever or excessive sweating. Patients being treated with quetiapine are known to register an increase in their cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Quetiapine also increases the risk of hyperglycemia, so patients with a family history of diabetes have to get their blood sugar levels monitored regularly to detect onset of diabetes while a visit to the ophthalmologist once in six months is necessary to detect cataract formation - in both these cases, if results are positive, then treatment with Seroquel will have to be discontinued.
One way to avoid dizziness or lightheadness is for patients to slowly rise from bed or from a sitting position. Strenuous exercise, exposure to extreme heat and consumption of alcoholic beverages has to be avoided while taking quetiapine. Care has to be taken when Seroquel is given to elderly people as they are at an increased risk to death when treated with antipsychotic. It is recommended that pregnant women should not be treated with Seroquel, while nursing mothers who are consuming quetiapine should not breastfeed their babies. Children who are 10 or above can also be treated with Seroquel, but with a differing dosage from adults. Never share your medicine with others, even if they have the same symptoms - it could harm them.
Seroquel has to be stored at room temperature, away from heat, light and moisture. It cannot be stored in the bathroom. This drug has to be kept out of reach of children and pets. Follow your doctor's instructions - do not take larger doses or take it longer than prescribed. The tablet must not be broken, crushed or chewed, but swallowed whole with a full glass of water. While on Seroquel, no new medication should be taken without the psychiatrist's knowledge. The psychiatrist may gradually increase the dose over several days or weeks to reach the desired result.
