Whether you like it or not, mood swings are bound to affect you at one time or another. Commonly identified as the shifts in a person's mood, women are known to be more prone to it than men. As differentiated from mental disorder symptoms, however, common mood swings are temporary and far more manageable, manifesting in a variety of feelings ranging from typical irritability to a brief period of glumness.

Likewise, mood swings are caused by a variety of factors, with hormonal changes and specific chemical imbalances in the brain being the most common. Nevertheless, regardless of whatever reason, the fact remains that your mood swings can be controlled. Doing so benefits you in two ways: you better yourself and your life improves as a consequence. To help you get started on the right path to managing your mood swings, learn and practice these simple, practical tips:

Find out the specific circumstances that may have caused your mood swings.

Mood swings do not just spring out of the blue for no exact reason. Setting aside hormonal fluctuations/changes and brain chemical reactions, your mood swings are triggered by an underlying problem or issue concerning your life. If you are aware of what these problems are, address the issue by talking to your chosen confidante. Unburdening yourself works not only to help you feel better, but it could also help you come up with an effective solution.

Cut down on stress.

When you are stressed out, your moods are expected to act up sooner or later. Both physical and emotional stress could trigger a mood swing without you knowing it. So the key here is to reduce your exposure to stressors while practising effective de-stressing techniques. With regards to choosing which method works for you, you can opt for anything so long as you base them on your personal preference and lifestyle.

Divide your meals evenly during the day.

Low blood sugar has been identified as one of the causes of mood swings. To avoid this, make sure that your meals are spaced evenly. At best, dividing your meals into several equally spaced smaller meals rather than three big ones would ensure that your blood sugar level stays constant.

Stay physically active.

Another effective way of regulating your moods is by exercising regularly. Since exercise triggers the release of your brain's endorphins, you prevent your moods from dipping because the latter works to give you a good feeling.

Get your daily dose of sunshine.

Did you know that Vitamin D is an effective mood regulator? Aside from keeping your bones strong and healthy, they affect your moods positively by keeping you from feeling depressed. So get your daily dose of sunshine by basking in the warm glow of the early morning sun for at least 30 minutes.

Look forward instead of persistently digging up the past.

Habitually unearthing painful memories instantaneously drags your moods. Whenever painful images intrude your thoughts, stop them on the spot and do your best to stay optimistic.

Stay in touch with the people in your life.

Staying cooped up by yourself most of the time could really promote bad memories to keep rewinding inside your head. Although "alone time" is needed to help you stay in touch with your inner self, too much of it can cause you to sacrifice precious bonding time with the special people in your life, thus, leaving you susceptible to having another mood swing episode.
