Stress and Depression During the Holidays

Submitted by gonzaga.marco

The holiday season is probably the merriest time of the year. This is time for family and friends gathering, where everyone is expected to be at their jolliest.

However, this is not the case for some people. Instead of enjoying the holiday season with relatives and friends, they are totally stressed out and depressed at this time of the year. For these people, holidays bring about loads of errands, dizzying shopping trips, annoying guests, and tons of chores to attend to.

There are different trigger points of stress and depression during the holidays. Below are three of the most common trigger points of holiday stress:

Money.
Since holiday season is the time for gift giving and hosting scrumptious feasts for family and friends, you are bound to spend a lot of money to please everybody. And this can indeed be very stressful. Overspending is very likely during the holidays as you need to shop for gifts, buy food, or even travel to spend the holidays with family or friends. As an end result for trying to make everybody happy, you are bound in financial worries that can lead to helplessness and sadness.

Physical demands.
The high demands of the holiday season can really lead to physical exhaustion and stress. In fact, this time of the year is not really a break for most people, especially the adults. There is nothing more stressful and tiring than the holidays for adults as they are bound to complete their holiday shopping, go to gatherings, as well as buy and prepare for the meals. These chores are really exhausting and depressing.

Relationships.
This factor may have two different faces. The first one is when a person becomes so stressed on the fact that the holiday season requires him or her to spend time with family members that he or she has problems dealing with. This can be really stressful. As misunderstandings and conflicts are normal in any family, these may lead to further complications if these are not settled before the holidays. The second face, on the other hand, is having to spend the holiday season alone, with no family and friends to celebrate it with. Both scenarios can be really depressing and stressful.
