Stress: Are You Holding Yourself Back?-00-4756Submitted by Pat Patrickson Sun, 6 Dec 2009
Most people never actually realize it, but their stress levels may be hampering their progress in different aspects of their lives. However, in many cases it is possible to break free from the cycle, and still edge ahead.
Stress wears you down physically, mentally and psychologically. The effects can be quite devastating if you allow it to get out of hand. Firstly, stress interferes with your capabilities, like concentration and the ability to make clear decisions. Unfortunately, letting this get the better of you may hamper your possibilities for career advance. Additionally, it tends to interfere with your sleeping patterns, which once again makes it difficult to perform at peak levels during working hours. It becomes a vicious cycle that simply keeps getting worse. Secondly, it affects your health. You may find yourself being constantly tired, and developing all kinds of unusual medical problems as your system struggles to cope. The pressure simply becomes too much, and your body starts showing the strain. Lastly, the psychological pressure is often transferred to your family at home. In most cases, this results in conflict and more stress, or complete withdrawal. If your family withdraws from you, you lose the support you desperately need in order to be able to bear the burdens you have been laden with. Their lack of support may eventually cause you to stop caring, letting yourself go. Once you stop caring, you may face depression. For most people it is simply not possible to escape stress completely. However, there are ways and means of dealing with stress. The actual strategies differ from one person to the next, since your needs are unique to your circumstances and your personality. Don't be in denial until it's too late. Accept the fact that you need to address the situation, and do something about it. You could consider going to the gym and working your frustrations off. You may want to spend some time with the kids, which will take your mind off everything while you are bonding with your family. You may want to consider playing computer games that demand constant involvement, or spend some time listening to relaxing music. How you do it is entirely up to you. Just don't let it become one of the things you never get around to doing. If you do, you may eventually damage your career and your relationship. Depending on the amount of damage you do, you may end up forfeiting both.
