Understanding the Physical Effects of StressSubmitted by jkworthyW Mon, 8 Jun 2009
Stress affects everyone in different ways, but it is recognized as one of the causes of many illnesses, serious and not so serious. It is important to recognize your symptoms of stress so that you can handle them effectively before they leave any lasting effects on your body.
The body sees stress as a threat to your body and sets a chain of reactions in motion to help the body combat the effects. It releases a flood of hormones throughout the body to combat what it sees as a foreign invader even though the threat may not be real and only perceived. When your body is working properly it is able to help you deal with all the situations that arise in your daily life, some of which are more stressful than others. It will help you have the energy you need for these situations and help you stay focused on your work and your health. Stress will help you rise to the occasion when you are faced with a challenge and help you find solutions to your problems. However, when you are under constant stress and you think there is no way out of the situation, this can have negative effects resulting in physical effects of stress that leave you feeling ill. Some of the physical effects of stress are more serious than others. Chronic stress can affect every one of your organs and reduce your body's immunity to common illnesses. This means you will catch the common cold more frequently and pick up every virus in which you come in contact. When you have pain in any part of your body that is not caused by a fall or other action you can remember, it is likely the result of stress. Stomach problems are also the result of stress. If a situation in your life causes you to be continually anxious or worried, this could lead to ulcers. You may get nauseated or physically sick when you are worried about something and this can lead to a whole host of problems with your digestive system if you do not take steps toward managing stress in your life. Disruptions in sleep patterns are also physical effects of stress. For some people, when they are stressed they are unable to get a good night's sleep, while others are excessively tired and want to sleep all the time. Both of these will have an impact on your performance during the day because you are tired and therefore are unable to concentrate on the task at hand. Stress related health problems can lead to heart disease because of the increased heart rate and blood pressure involved in the body's reaction to stress. This puts undue pressure on the heart, the arteries and the blood vessels causing them to break down over time due to the buildup of plaque. Even though it may not be initially regarded as one of the physical effects of stress, you may have comfort foods you turn to when you feel stressed. Most of the time these comfort foods are high in fat and sugar, which leads to weight gain. If you do not exercise as a way of reducing stress and keeping your body fit, the extra pounds will keep piling on leading to obesity, which has been associated with many types of medical conditions.
