Tinnitus Retraining Therapy: A Viable Option?

Submitted by Pat Patrickson

If you have consulted with your physician about your tinnitus, TRT, or tinnitus retraining therapy may have been offered as an option to deal with the symptoms.

Many people are under the impression that tinnitus is an incurable condition, and that there is no cure. This is not true at all. In most cases, the prime cause of tinnitus is a loss of hearing, yet not all people suffering a loss of hearing suffers from tinnitus. The one does not have to lead to the other.

For many people, the only option seems to be to become used to the symptoms, and accept them as a part of life. Tinnitus retraining therapy was designed to ease this process.

The therapy revolves around training the ears, as well as the mind, to ignore the buzzing sounds. The idea is to reduce your awareness, reducing the intrusion to a level you are able to live with and deal with. It is a gradual process, but it does have merit.

Although it is probably not the ideal solution, the method does produce some results. However, as the symptoms increase in intensity over time, you may have to repeat the treatment to adapt to the higher noise levels. Although it helps you to cope with the irritation, it may not help with your hearing problems in conversation. Although your perception of the sound is reduced, it still has the capacity to interfere with what you want to hear.

It does not have to be a permanent problem that returns to haunt you periodically. Since not everybody suffering from a loss of hearing shares the symptoms of tinnitus sufferers, there is no reason to accept it as a part of your loss of hearing. The loss of hearing may be permanent and incurable, but the tinnitus is not.

There are proven ways to reduce, and in many cases even eliminate, your tinnitus symptoms completely. The treatments do not require any drugs or expensive apparatus, and do not cost a fortune. These treatments are not capable of delivering instant results, but their efficiency has been proven time and again.
